Sharks repeat as J-V girls’ soccer champs

Melinda Tupuola scored a brace to earn the division’s most valuable player award.
In the game for 3rd & 4th place, the Leone Lions defeated the Faga’itua Vikings 2-0.
The Sharks’ J-V win also helped Samoana sweep the girls’ soccer as their varsity team defeated Tafuna 3-1 in their match played later that day.
Trophies for 1st to 4th were handed out by DOE official Li’a Amisone Sr. and FFAS President Iuli Alex Godinet. Soccer balls were also part of the prizes for all teams.
The MVP award included a trophy, soccer ball and Futsal shoes. All prizes were provided by FFAS.
11 minutes from full time and with the score tied 1-1, Tupuola took a pass from Lilly Tauala that a defender failed to control about two yards into the penalty area and five yards to the right of the nearest goal post. She adeptly placed the game-winning shot, while falling down, to the far left goal post for the score to break the tie.
All goals were scored in the second half with the Sharks drawing first blood.
A minute and a half into the second period two Tafuna defenders could not control the ball inside their own box and Tupuola smartly pounced on it with a successful tackle and shot at goal.
A little over five minutes later Tafuna’s best player Titiula Manuma took a throw-in more than 10 yards from the penalty box and then proceeded to dazzle her way past five defenders to shoot and score right on the edge of the penalty area for the equalizer.
Rejane Petaia put Leone up 1-0 in the first half of the 3rd & 4th match between the Lions and Vikings while Jonelle Lam Yuen added a goal of her own in the second half to help her team defeat Faga’itua 2-0.
FFAS thanks Kananafou for allowing its field to be used for the ASHSAA girls’ soccer season.
