ASHSAA boys’ soccer kicks off

The Warriors got off to a good start with a win over Faga’itua while the Lions beginning was a draw.
Tafuna beat Faga’itua 3-1 while in other varsity games it was Leone Lions 3, Kananafou Stallions 0 and Nu’uuli Voc-Tech Wildcats 3, Samoana Sharks 3. There are seven teams in the division with Fa’asao-Marist Crusaders off with a bye.
For the J-V group it was Leone Lions 0, Faga’itua Vikings 0 and Samoana Sharks 2, Tafuna Warriors 1. There are five teams in the division with the Nu’uuli Voc-Tech Wildcats idle over the weekend.
VARSITY
WARRIORS 3, VIKINGS 1
Futsal MVP Roy Luani got things off to a good start with a strike in the first half that had them up 1-0 but in the second it was all Tafuna with Richard Mulitalo scoring the equalizer early.
Dion Ott chipped in with the go-ahead goal while Maturo Fe’a added one of his own for the game’s finaly tally as the defending champs got off to a great start with a win in their season-opener.
WILDCATS 3, SHARKS 3
By the end of the first half the Sharks were up 3-1 with a brace of goals from J.P. Fa’avae and another by Elama Fa’atonu.
Dallas Taufete’e had the lone strike for the Wildcats in the first half and second half goals from Filo Matau and Livi Afano had the game tied at the end of regulation for a near comeback win for the Wildcats if not for a missed shot from the spot.
LIONS 3, STALLIONS 0
Leone is on the hunt again for another championship game appearance after falling short in last year’s title match to Tafuna with a 3-0, season opening win against Kananafou.
Goals came from some of last year’s returners who were also key in their second place finish — Ryan Petaia, Bobby Nu’usila and Risati Mapu.
Kananafou is off this Saturday while the Crusaders take to the field for the first time this season against Faga’itua while Leone faces the Wildcats and the Warriors take on the Sharks.
There will be a one-round robin contest with the top four teams advancing to the playoffs scheduled for April 13.
JUNIOR VARSITY
LIONS 0, VIKINGS 0
A tough opener for the defending champs as they start the defense of title with a draw.
SHARKS 2, WARRIORS 1
Goals from Lorenzo and Neemia Kaleopa were enough for Samoana to hold off Tafuna 2-1 in their season opener on Saturday.
The Warriors lone score came from Fa’aolataga Siaulaiga.
Teams will play a one round-robin season with the top four heading to the postseason.
Tafuna is off this weekend while Samoana plays Leone and the Vikings face off against the Wildcats.
