Samoana, Faga’itua win girls varsity semi-finals

The games were played on Feb. 21, 2012 at Pago Park Soccer Stadium with the Sharks handling the Kananafou Stallions with ease in a 6-0 win while the Lions could not claw out of a 2-0 hole on their way to a 3-1 loss to the Vikings.
VIKINGS 3, LIONS 1
In the latter half of the season Leone was the hot team, beating up on schools that they could not handle during the first round and this included a 2-0 win over Faga’itua on Feb. 11.
They also caused the only blemish on Samoana’s record, a 1-1 draw, that elevated Leone into championship contender.
But that long climb from the bottom came to a crashing halt thanks to Josephine Mata’u and her teammates.
Mata’u scored two goals with the second coming on a great breakaway from midfield that helped push the lead back up to two, 3-1.
The goal couldn’t have been more timely as Leone was threatening to equalize but with less than 10 to play Mata’u’s heroics insured their championship game berth.
SHARKS 5, STALLIONS 0
Two quick scores in the first five minutes saw Samoana lead 2-0 on their way to a 5-0 win over the undermatched Stallions.
Yandell Liu completed a hat trick in Samoana’s dominating win that put them through to the final for their attempt at back-to-back championship titles.
