Utulei Youth holds on to Cup in 3-2 win

Utulei Youth barely held on to its National Cup in a 3-2 decision over Royal Puma on Match Day 3 of the 2016 FFAS National League on Saturday, Sept. 3 at Pago Park Soccer Stadium.

In other games, it was Tafuna Jets 1, Black Roses 0; Lion Heart 2, Ilaoa & To’omata 1; Pago Youth 4, Green Bay 0 and Vaiala Tongan 6, PanSa 0.

UTULEI YOUTH 3, ROYAL PUMA 2

Utulei Youth (3-0-0) scored all three goals in the first half against Royal Puma (0-0-3), and luckily for them, it was enough to hold on to the National Cup for a third straight week.

Two of their three goals were from penalty kicks, with Ne’emia Kaleopa scoring twice in the game while Kome Tomasi added the third goal. Kaleopa had to pick up a big offensive work load due to the absence of Kaleopa Siligi. Utulei lost one of their best attacking players in Siligi, but saw the return of Elama Fa’atonu to their lineup as he came back from California.

Pio Punefu scored for Royal Puma, one goal in each half, and their team kept up the attack in the second half. However, they could not score an equalizer and Utulei Youth walked away with the Cup for the third straight week.

Utulei Youth has a big challenge this coming week with a resurgent Pago Youth gunning for the Cup, and a winning streak. Royal Puma takes on Black Roses.

LION HEART 2, ILAOA & TO’OMATA 1

Crease Collins scored two goals to help Lion Heart (2-0-1) edge Ilaoa & To’omata (1-1-1) 2-1 in a thrilling match last Saturday.

Victor Avalos scored for the Leone based team in the 15th minute, but Collins answered with his first goal five minutes later. Collins then scored the game-winner on a perfectly timed pass inside the 6-yard box for the tap in goal.

Lion Heart will play against Vaiala Tongan while Ilaoa & To’omata faces off against Green Bay.

TAFUNA JETS 1, BLACK ROSES 0

Peter Alosio chased after a bouncing ball that pal, goalie KB Mariota, had punted from his penalty area, and headed it over the Black Roses goalie for the game’s only goal in the 57th minute of a hotly, contested match.

The Jets (2-1-0) had numerous scoring opportunities in the game, but goalie Anthony Letele had a great game in front of the net. He had good help from his defenders and they were able to hold off Tafuna until that last goal. Tafuna could have made it 2-0 on the waning minutes of the game but Pili Taulealo hit the crossbar on his penalty kick attempt.

Tafuna will play against PanSa this week while Black Roses (0-0-3) plays against Royal Puma.

PAGO YOUTH 4, GREEN BAY 0

Gene Ne’emia recorded a hat trick for Pago Youth (3-0-0) in their 4-0 win over Green Bay (1-0-2). Despite the score, the Faga’alu based team gave it a good fight, but minor lapses in their defense allowed the winning team to score four goals.

Pago Youth will challenge for the Cup this week against holders Utulei Youth, while Green Bay takes on Ilaoa & To’omata.

VAIALA TONGAN 6, PANSA 0

Sione Moeaki had a field day against PanSa (0-0-3), scoring four goals.

Vaha Tua and Lofa Kofe scored the other two goals in an easy win for Vaiala Tongan (2-0-1). They will prepare this week to play against Lion Heart while PanSa takes on the Tafuna Jets.
