The Samoana Sharks breezed through the ASHSAA Boys’ varsity soccer season with a perfect, 7-0 season.
They clinched the title with a 6-0 win over the Faga’itua Vikings on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at Pago Park Soccer Stadium.
Under ASHSAA rule, in a varsity division competition, a team that completes the season undefeated will be declared champions. However, if there is no undefeated team, then all teams will move on to a playoff format to determine the season’s winner.
The Sharks put an end to a playoff scenario with its win over the Faga’itua Vikings last week.
The only team with a viable shot at beating the Sharks was the Iakina Adventist Academy Saints, a team that played with technical cohesiveness. This was something lacking in most teams, including Samoana. However, when the two teams met, the Sharks’ athleticism proved to be the difference maker as they beat Iakina 4-1 on April 11.
Samoana is blessed with a host of experienced players, such as twins Eugene and Roy Ledoux, Chris Faamoana, Pesa Taugavau, Junior Choi, Mahonri Lotulelei, Elliot Lelei and goalie John Iele. Besides Iele, all have experience on the international level competing in either OFC international youth of club competitions.
At least 15 members of their squad played in the FFAS National League last year, and have former American Samoa men’s National Team captain, Li’atama Amisone Jr., as their coach.
