Girls’ high school competition kicks off

The Tafuna Warriors, loaded with several stars on their team including Beulah Oney and Moaga Siaulaiga were stunned by the Faga’itua Vikings 3-1 while the Samoana Sharks won by forfeit against Nu’uuli Voc-Tech Wildcats in the varsity division.
In J-V games, the defending champs Samoana and Leone match was postponed due to a scheduling snafu while the Warriors held off the Vikings 2-1.

Kananafou went into the half leading 1-0 before the Lions’ coach Rita Simi changed tactics by moving her star player Meleane Kerisiano from the defenders position up the front.
That move helped Leone go on the scoreboard with Kerisiano scoring the equalizer and then helping set up her teammates to pull out the win.

Faga’itua took a 1-0 lead into the second half only to see Tafuna storm back to tie it 1-1.
Tafuna could sense a change of momentum and had the Vikings defending furiously for a 15-minute stretch that drained their energy and Faga’itua used this to their advantage by scoring two more goals to put the match away.
Defending champs Fa’asao-Marist were off with a bye but will take to the field this Saturday against the Samoana Sharks.

Tafuna spent the majority of the match on the attack but still barely pulled off the win after Faga’itua tied it for a stretch in the first half.
