Women’s 2017 National League kicks off

It was an eventful opening day for the 2017 FFAS Women’s National League, with the challenge cup wrested away from Ilaoa & To’omata by Taputimu Youth, and the ladies playing in an 11-a-side format for the first time since 2013.

10 teams are competing in the single, round-robin competition that kicked off on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at Pago Park Soccer Stadium.

Ilaoa & To’omata closed out the 2016 year holding on to the cup, but in their first defense of the 2017 season, they lost it to Taputimu Youth 2-1.  In other games, it was Vaiala Tongan 1, Royal Puma 1; Tafuna Jets 4, PanSa 1; Green Bay 4, Lion Heart 0 and Black Roses 3, Pago Youth 0 in a forfeited match.

TAPUTIMU YOUTH 2, ILAOA & TO’OMATA 1

With just a minute remaining to play, Salevu Filiva’a scored the game winning goal off of a free kick from outside of the penalty area, a lobbing shot at goal that was out of reach of the Ilaoa & To’omata goalkeeper’s reaching hands.

What had looked like a game that would end in a tie instead saw the Women’s FFAS Cup change hands on the opening weekend of the competition.

Veronica Iupati of Ilaoa & To’omata scored in the first half, and at the break the Cup holders were leading 1-0.

In the second half, Moli Toilolo scored the equalizer, enabling the last minute heroics from Filiva’a.

Taputimu will put up the challenge cup this coming Saturday against the Tafuna Jets, while Ilaoa & To’omata takes on Black Roses.

VAIALA TONGAN 1, ROYAL PUMA 1

This was a fast paced game, with Royal Puma having to put up with American Samoa’s U-16 speedster up front, Oloataua Tofaeono.

She eventually saved Vaiala Tongan with a second half goal for the equalizer, outsprinting the Royal Puma defenders from the midway mark on a through ball that she calmly tapped away from the onrushing goalie, before walking it in to the back of the net.

Josephine Seui scored in the first half for Royal Puma.

Royal Puma will play Green Bay this week while Vaiala Tongan faces off against PanSa.

TAFUNA JETS 4, PANSA 1

Sisters Jasmine and Vasati Makiasi scored two goals each for the Tafuna Jets in their 4-1 win over PanSa.

Blanche Herrera scored PanSa’s lone goal in the game.

The Tafuna Jets are the defending champions of the division, and will challenge for the cup this coming Saturday against Taputimu Youth, while PanSa takes on Vaiala Tongan.

GREEN BAY 4, LION HEART 0

Precious Ieremia completed a hat trick in helping Green Bay win against Lion Heart 4-0 last Saturday.  Josephine Milovale scored the other goal for Green Bay.

Lion Heart will play against Pago Youth in their second round match while Green Bay faces off against Royal Puma.

BLACK ROSES 3, PAGO YOUTH (FORFEIT)

Black Roses were awarded the win by forfeit after Pago Youth did not have enough registered players to play.

Black Roses will play against Ilaoa & To’omata this week while Pago takes on Lion Heart.
