Sharks V, Cougars J-V still in front at end of 1st round-robin

Samoana Sharks varsity and Fa’asao-Marist Cougar’s J-V are still leading their respective divisions, and still undefeated at the conclusion of the first round-robin of the 2016-2017 ASHSAA Girls soccer season.

The second round-robin begins on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017.

VARSITY

Samoana is still unbeaten with a 5-0 record, following two close wins against South Pacific Academy, and the Tafuna Warriors with 1-0 and 2-0 scores, respectively.

SPA is second with a 3-1-1 record, followed by Tafuna at 2-1-3. The defending champions, Fa’asao-Marist, are in fourth place with a 2-0-1 showing so far, followed by Faga’itua (2-0-3) and Leone (0-6).

Below are results of varsity games from the previous week.

SATURDAY, FEB. 18

SHARKS 2, WARRIORS 0

A two-goal performance by Lei Amisone helped stave off a potential tie against Tafuna last Saturday. The goals came late in the second half in a very hotly contested match.

Tafuna had their chances in the first half with Mala Mataiao breaking away for a one-v-one against Samoana’s goalie twice, and coming away frustrated as both of her shots went straight towards the Sharks’ net minder.

They had the momentum in the first half, but with Tafuna’s defenders hanging way inside their penalty area, Samoana went on the offensive and eventually breaking through to score twice.

VIKINGS 8, LIONS 0

Faga’itua won big against Leone with an 8-0 scoreline.

They scored three goals in the first half before putting the game away with a five-goal performance in the last half. Vaitu’utu’ulima Tulafono, Fatima Pati and Lina Williams all scored two goals each for the Vikings.

FRIDAY, FEB. 17 

DOLPHINS vs. COUGARS

Game between Fa’asao-Marist and SPA was postponed due to transportation issues for the Cougars.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 15

VIKINGS 3, WARRIORS 0 (FORFEIT)

The Vikings were awarded a win by forfeit due to Tafuna not conformaing to ASHSAA coaching regulations.

MONDAY, FEB. 13 

SHARKS 1, DOLPHINS 0

Mandy Tu’ufuli scored the game winner against a tough SPA team in the battle between two of the division’s top teams.

SPA also had their chances but excellent goalkeeping from Samoana helped the Sharks hold on for the win.

SATURDAY, FEB. 11

COUGARS 6, LIONS 0

Fa’asao-Marist cruised to an easy victory against Leone thanks to a brace of goals from three players — Susan Godinet, Taira Uhrle, and Maricar Parungo.

DOLPHINS 7, VIKINGS 2

SPA dominated Faga’itua 7-2 after finishing the first half with a 4-0 lead.

Sulu Shalhout scored four goals for the Dolphins, and Rapiel Fa’ata’a scored twice.

FRIDAY, FEB. 10

WARRIORS 4, LIONS 1

Mataiao scored twice for Tafuna as she helped her team beat Leone 4-1. Tauese Alosio and Alisha Sila also scored for the Warriors while Roselyn Faleao scored for Leone.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 8

COUGARS vs. SHARKS

Game was postponed due to inclement weather.

JUNIOR VARSITY

Defending champions Fa’asao-Marist are perfect with a 4-0 record at the end of the first round, and in second place is Leone with a 2-1-2 record. Faga’itua is third (2-0-2), followed by Tafuna (2-0-3), and finally Samoana (0-1-3).

The team with the best record at the end of the second round-robin schedule will be crowned champions.

WARRIORS 3, SHARKS 2

Tafuna led at the end of the first half with a 2-1 score, and managed to just hold on to their lead by the end of the game by a one-goal margin.

LIONS 1, VIKINGS 0

Amaryl Hollister scored the only goal of the game late in the second half to maintain their hold on the No. 2 spot in the standings.

FRIDAY, FEB. 17

DOLPHINS vs. COUGARS

Game between Fa’asao-Marist and SPA was postponed due to transportation issues for the Cougars.

Olivia Vaiomauga came to the rescue yet again for the Cougars with the game’s lone goal.

Leone pulled off a 1-0 win over Tafuna thanks to the game winning score from Senerita Sekone.

COUGARS vs. SHARKS

Game was postponed due to inclement weather.
