The previous week, on Friday, July 26, 2024, a five-day FIFA MA Referee Course concluded, led by OFC Head of Refereeing Kevin Stoltenkamp, with assistance from Tonga Football Fitness Instructor Siuta Tavake and FFAS Referee Development Officer Sione Mau, alongside local senior referees.
This event marked Kevin’s second visit to American Samoa to conduct this vital course, coinciding perfectly with the much-anticipated MA 2024 National League that commenced on Saturday, July 27th.
Twenty participants completed the course, comprising match officials, local club coaches, and players, all aiming to deepen their understanding of the Laws of the Game and broaden their knowledge of the sport they are clearly passionate about.
At the Closing Ceremony, FFAS CEO Tavita Taumua congratulated the graduates as they received their certificates. He extended traditional Samoan honorifics, acknowledging FFAS President and Western District Governor Fai’ivae Iuli Alex Godinet, and Executive Committee Member Uikelotu Tua and FFAS Technical Director Ruben Luvu. Tavita thanked Kevin and Siuta, asking Kevin to begin the final day’s remarks and inviting the President to provide the closing words.
Kevin reflected on the numerous changes since 2023 and reiterated his belief in the importance of education in keeping up-to-date with the game’s laws and regulations. He stated, “The more we educate, the easier our job will be.” He stressed the importance of a holistic approach that includes fostering strong relationships both on and off the field, which he believes will build trust and unity within the team, particularly in challenging situations.
In his concluding remarks, he underscored that the course aimed to ensure the consistent application of the material learned to future situations. With a smile, Kevin challenged the participants: “I encourage you to elevate your fitness to the next level.”
Fai’ivae, supporting Kevin’s remarks, stated, “Kevin is well-acquainted with American Samoa, marking his second consecutive year of commitment to us. I encourage you to pay attention to the lessons learned. The knowledge gained will enhance your learning and can be shared with our Clubs.”
He expressed, “I am confident that over the past five days, you have enhanced your skills as officials and will continue to assist our RDO, Sione Mau, and Technical Director, Ruben Luvu, in overseeing and guiding the progress of our games.”
Fai’ivae concluded, “Take this opportunity to excel as officials, players, and coaches, and contribute to the development of our beloved sport, Football/Soccer.”
