(see separate story for women’s team list and the coaching staff)
“We are happy with the team and commend our CEO Tavita Taumua, his staff and the coaching staff for their hard work in training our men and women’s teams,” Iuli said. “This is our best team available and we hope that you bring your best out on the field in New Caledonia.”
FFAS’ group totalling 44 players and team officials, leave for New Caledonia with the American Samoa contingent via a chartered Air Pacific flight at 11:50 p.m. on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 and arrive back in the territory at 6 a.m. on Monday, September 12, 2011.
MEN’S TEAM
The team has been practicing as a whole for the first time after off-island based goalie Nicky Salapu joined the team on August 18.
He suited up for the team’s final warm-up game against Black Roses and recorded a clean sheet as the national squad won 3-0.
The total number of players traveling is 17 with players logging the most recent experience goes to those that competed in the 2011 version of the OFC Men’s U-20 Championship.
They are Shalom Luani, Suani Uelese, Frederick Charles Uhrle, Ismael D’Angelo Herrera, Moe Casper Kuresa and Daru Taumua. Luani was also went to the OFC Men’s U-17 Championship.
There are six returning from the 2007 Pacific Games in Samoa — Terrence Sinapati, Travis Sinapati, John Saelua Jr., Uasila’a Heleta, Natia Natia and Pesamino Victor.
Four of the 17 players will be representing American Samoa for the first time — Liatama Amisone Jr., Rafe Tala Luvu, Chin Fu Ta’ase and Edgar Apulu.
Their coach is Iofi ‘Avele’ Lalogafuafua while the assistant coach is Lemusa Alatasi. The team manager is Tavita Taumua while Larry Mana’o has been tabbed as the Technical Advisor.
Amisone will be wearing the captain’s arm band while his vice-captains are Heleta and Terrence Sinapati.
“We’ve been training very hard and are looking for a good result out there in New Caledonia,” said coach Lalogafuafua.
In a meeting between the association’s leaders and the players’ parents last week, the playing and training uniforms were displayed for all to see as well as other accompanying apparel.
Each player was given a new pair of cleats as well as traveling bags and FFAS apparel.
The parents thanked the association for all it had done and asked only one thing of the players — that they give it their best by laying it all out on the field during the game.
“If you play your best out there in representing your country and us your parents, then that’s all we ask for,” one parent said.
