Utulei hoists 2013 crown

The champion’s title was not the only prize Utulei went home with as the season came to a close, with Kaleopa Siligi walking away with a wealth of awards including the Golden Boot for most goals scored as well as being awarded the league’s Most Valuable Player.
Elama Fa’atonu was named the MVP of the final after scoring twice against Vaitogi while also playing stellar defense for his team.
Football Federation American Samoa executive committee member Ioane Evagelia was on hand to close the competition, thanking all the teams for participating and congratulating those that made the playoffs.
FFAS President Iuli Alex Godinet was unavailable due to his attending an OFC Executive Committee meeting in Auckland, New Zealand.
In the third place playoff Lion Heart beat FC SKBC to claim the final podium spot.
Meanwhile in the lead-up to the final Utulei Youth eked out a 2-1 win in a difficult but exciting semi-final match up.
The second semi-final between Vaitogi United and FC SKBC was also a thriller with victory for the former setting up an all Pool-A final between Vaitogi and Utulei.
“This was a great tournament and it is unfortunate that we could not finish it in a gymnasium,” FFAS CEO Tavita Taumua says. “But that’s something that was out of our hands and we thank all the clubs for putting up with this setback and continuing the tournament on grass.
“We also want to thank our tournament sponsors — Laufou Shopping Center, Godinet Rentals and Kristopher’s Store — for their support of us and our competitions,” added Taumua.
FFAS is currently working on organizing a 7-a-side, outdoors tournament for women in the next month before preparing for the 11-a-side National League later in the year.
