American Samoa to take on hosts Samoa in OFC U-17

“The two halves of our team were finally able to get together and have a training session in Samoa in preparation for this tournament,” explained coach, Frederick Maiava. “The other half of our team was part of our U-20 team that played in Tonga and are now together with our players that stayed and trained back home.”
The U-20 players joining the squad are Steven Fiso, Gabriel Taumua, Takai Pouli, Joseph Purcell, Joseph ‘Jr.’ Choi, Talalelei Auva’a, Michael Settle and Masila Siua. Fiso scored American Samoa’s only goal at the OFC Men’s U-20 Preliminary Tournament 2016 in Tonga.
Siua, at 13 years old, is the youngest player on the team. Of the eight current U-20 players that also qualify to compete in the U-17s, Fiso, Taumua and Pouli were starters while the others made the bulk of their appearances in a 5-0 loss to the Cook Islands on the final day.
“These players are coming in with good experience and the coaching staff and I will be relying on them to guide and lead the rest of our team,” Maiava said.
Gabriel Taumua was picked by his peers to captain the team and Purcell was added as vice-captain by the team management.
Maiava, assistant coach Lemusa Alatasi flew to Samoa with the rest of the team on June 30 before being joined by the rest of the management team, Tavita Taumua (team manager), goalkeeper coach Sione Mau, physio Luaao Wasko and Technical Adviser Rupeni Luvu.
“I am expecting Samoa to be very physical against us and I’m sure they are going to be expecting to score early especially with the help of the home crowd on their side,” Maiava said. “We’ve trained our boys all these months and now it’s up to them when they step into the field. All we as coaches can do now is to encourage them and assist them with instructions and words from the sideline.”
“We are looking forward to a great game against Samoa but most of all are thankful to arrive safely in Samoa and have our American Samoa U-17 team all together,” said team manager Tavita Taumua. “It’s been a long travel for some of us but we’re all healthy and the boys are ready to play.”
