Cougars varsity sweeps Girls’ HS soccer titles

It was a thrilling final with the Cougars changing things up in this game in order to clinch the title they have played for for two years straight. Last year they lost to the Kanana Fou Stallions.
Earlier in the season they were handled with ease by the Vikings in a 3-2 loss, and with the way Faga’itua had been playing, many favored them to win the season.
This time around the Cougars played much better, dominating possession of the ball and attacks while playing solidly on defense.
Coach Mike Tolmie moved Juliana Radinikadavu to the back and she proved the difference with many defensive stops in the championship game, including the semi-finals. Radinikadavu and Cassie Mahuka were the Cougars’ keys in stopping Faga’itua from a repeat win in the now completed season.
Meanwhile, championship game MVP Nikki Tolmie (daughter to Tolmie the coach), provided the offensive spark with great passing and many a challenging-shot at goal. In the 23rd minute she lobbed a shot that just beat the goalie for the opening score and Susan Godinet scored on the 30-minute mark to give Fa’asao-Marist a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, Fatima Pati managed to beat the Cougars’ tough defenders to blast a shot at goal to cut the deficit against them by half.
Neither team managed to score again and Fa’asao-Marist would go on to celebrate their championship title after the final whistle.
In the junior varsity, the Cougars swept the division with a perfect, 7-0 record to clinch the title. Jordynn Liu-kuey of Fa’asao-Marist was named MVP of the division.
Father Vaiula Iulio presented the trophies during the awards ceremony on behalf of FFAS President Faiivae Iuli Alex Godinet, the executive committee and the association. He also provided the opening and closing prayers for the championship game.
