Lions roar into 3rd place

A season-long climb from the bottom of the standings saw the Leone Lions’ varsity squad roar into third place after beating the Kananafou Stallions 3-0 in ASHSAA Girls Soccer on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012.

Leone avenged a 1-0 loss they suffered against the Stallions in the first round and the hero for the Lions was Mary Ipiniu, completing a hat trick in a hard fought win.

Starting off the competition in the 7th and last place of the standings, it took Leone five games to earn their first win (2-1 against Fa’asao-Marist Cougars, Jan. 24). They started the season with a 0-4 losing streak but since then have been on a 3-1 win streak.

In other games played (varsity only) it was the Sharks 7, Cougars 1 and Warriors 3, Iakina 0 by forfeit.

Tafuna is another team that also started near the bottom of the standings before making a move of their own that has culminated in their first top four appearance after their forfeit win over Iakina on Jan. 31.

Only the top four teams advance to the playoffs set to kick off Feb. 16 and the Lions place, as well as the Warriors, is not secure as the Cougars and Stallions still have a chance at making the top four should the 3rd and 4th place teams falter.

No. 1 and No. 2 are beyond reach with the league-leading Sharks sitting comfortably with 24 points and the Vikings in second with 15.

Leone, Tafuna and Fa’asao-Marist are tied with 9 points each and the positioning being determined by the differential in goals (2 for the Lions, -1 for Tafuna and -12 for the Cougars).

Kananafou is 6th with six points and Iakina in 7th with 0 points.

J-V teams have been idle since Jan. 28 and resume play on Feb. 4.
